The open-source web browser Mozilla Firefox has now been upgraded to version 120.0. Along with this, Mozilla has also released Firefox version 115.5 Extended Stable Release (ESR) which is supported for more than a year from the release date.

This Firefox update includes some new features and improvements, most of which focus on enhancing the end-user’s privacy. It includes new website privacy preferences which the user can control, and preventing websites from tracking user activity.

New in Firefox 120

New website privacy preferences

Mozilla has added 2 new privacy preferences for the users to control so that the websites that they visit cannot track, sell, or share their data. These privacy preferences can be found at Application menu > Settings> Privacy & Security.

Here, Mozilla has added the following two options:

  • Tell websites not to sell or share my data
  • Send websites a “Do Not Track” request

The first policy falls under the Global Privacy Control to automatically notify the websites not to sell or share information about the user’s browsing session on a website. The second control point asks the websites not to track the activity on the website, however, it is up to the website whether to honor this request or not.

Note that these new privacy preferences are not enabled by default, which in my opinion, should have been. The users who would not know that new policies have been added would fail to take advantage of it.

Other improvements

A plethora of other improvements and enhancements have also been included in Firefox 120:

  • Ubuntu users can now import data from Chromium that was installed via Firefox Snap.
  • Users can now use a new DevTool feature to simulate browser tabs to be offline.
  • Firefox now imports TLS Trust Anchors from the operating system root store. This feature will be enabled by default in Windows, MacOS, and Android and can be disabled in Application menu > Settings > Privacy & Security > Certificates.
  • Keyboard shortcuts have been added for editing/deleting a credential on about:logins.
  • Support for “Copy Link Without Site Tracking,” which strips all site tracking data from a link upon copying, has been included.
  • Cookie Banner Blocker is enabled by default in private windows for all users in Germany.
  • URL Tracking Protection is enabled by default.
  • Protects user privacy with improvements to private windows as well as the ETP-Strict privacy configuration which enhances fingerprinting protection.
  • Picture-in-Picture mode has been improved and a new corner-snapping feature has been added for the Linux and Windows versions.
